So why am I talking about this movie? Well it happens to have been filmed in my neighborhood of my current city of residence and showcases some great local spots in the city like Zabars, the 79th street boat basin, Gray's Papaya, and Café Lalo.
Café Lalo (the place where Kathleen Kelly is 'stood up') is nestled on a tree and brownstone-lined block of West 83rd Street. It boasts over 100 different types of desserts, which are all beautifully displayed in the long glass counter. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows fill the space with natural light, making it a desirable place to read a book, write in a journal, or meet a friend for coffee. It has a slight European feel which is very much welcomed on the UWS where almost every block has a crowded Starbucks.
I was impressed with the large menu of breakfast, sandwiches, speciality drinks, and dessert. I went with my 'go to' sandwich and ordered the mozzarella, pesto, and tomato sandwich. I think that I've become a jaded New Yorker because the thought of paying $12 for a sandwich did not even phase me. Scary.
Overall, it was some good food but I think I would really return for the atmosphere. Who knows, maybe I'll run into Tom Hanks next time....
