The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen

This past month has been a blur. It was full of class, exams, flights, late nights out, and some of my favorite memories. I spent the last week in my old stomping grounds, San Francisco. We were attending a wedding of one of my best friends (Camilla of Champagne Bubbles) and decided to fly out a little early to maximize the time for celebration.

The wedding was absolutely breath-taking. It was intimate, full of love, and super super fun. Oh and did I mention that she looked drop dead gorgeous? Well, she did.

We had a flight back to NYC the following night so we spend the next day exploring and recharging our energy. Graham works in the SOMA area of the city and has been raving about this place I need to try. Something about grilled cheese? Clearly we had to go.

The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen, across the street from 21st Amendment, serves up multiple variations of the classic grilled cheese sandwich (this is actually reminded me of S'mac). Before I knew it, I was in line drooling and ordering the mousetrap and jalapeno popper sandwiches. Graham threw in a smoky tomato soup after reminding me that tomato soup and grilled cheese go together like chocolate and peanut butter. Smart boyfriend!

 {Mousetrap: Tillamook sharp cheddar, creamy havarti, and monterey jack on sourdough}
{Jalapeno Popper: chevre, monterey jack, applewood-smoked bacon, apricot-jalapeno relish on levain}

The soup was perfectly smokey and flavorful, only elevated by the garlicky homemade croutons. The cheese seemed never-ending as it oozed out with each bite. They seemed to have mastered the perfect 50/50 cheese to bread ratio. These sandwiches were so good. My tummy is actually grumbling as I write this. If you're ever in the area, give it a try. You won't be sorry!
