S'Mac

We all have our favorite comfort foods. For some it's ice cream, for others it's mashed potatoes. For me, it's macaroni and cheese. My parents always tell me how they had to live off macaroni and cheese for the first few years of their marriage as they were starting off. I'm not sure this memory had it's intended effect on me because personally, I could eat it every day and be happy.

Down in the East Village, there is a restaurant that only serves mac & cheese. S'Mac (short for Sarita's Macaroni and Cheese) offers up a mouthwatering menu with options like the Mediterranean, alpine, and masala.  You can choose between different sizes (nosh, major munch, mongo, and partay). They even offer a sampler for those that have a hard time making decisions and who really appreciate mac & cheese.

Our group ordered the philly cheesesteak mac and buffalo chicken mac. We decided to skip the crowded sit down restaurant and headed next door to the takeout shop. Our noshes came out in mini pizza boxes which I probably got way too excited about.

Anyways, back to the food. The philly cheesesteak mac included steak, cheese, grilled onions, green peppers, and macaroni (duh!). Each bite was heaven with that velvety cheese. It was comforting and satisfying. It would be perfect after a long night out or as greasy hangover food in the morning.

I only had a bite of the buffalo chicken mac but it was equally sinful. It was creamy with a hit of heat. I appreciated the crumbled blue cheese on top of the blanket of melted cheddar. I'm not a blue cheese fan but it really worked well.

Ok, so I guess it's obvious that I really liked S'Mac. I feel like I should be at full disclosure here though...I also like Kraft, Annie's, and Stouffers Macaroni and Cheese. I'm not one for the fancy stuff that restaurants charge an arm and a leg for (except for this), which I probably shouldn't be announcing on a food blog. Anyways, if you appreciate those varieties and the ability to customize your own dish, you will love S'Mac.

Mac n' cheese is a classic American comfort food. I don't know many people who don't love it.

  5. My friend's best friend opened up mac & cheese restaurant in Berkeley this spring and it's very similar to this store. Maybe a bit more Californian style. I forgot about visiting the restaurant and your post reminded me! Sounds like you had a good bite there. :-)
